Eskom’s Stage 5 Load Shedding: Dark Days Loom for South Africa

  1. Eskom has announced indefinite stage 5 load shedding across South Africa due to higher-than-expected energy demand, with Cape Town experiencing stage 4 load shedding thanks to the Steenbras pumped-storage dam.
  2. The South African Reserve Bank predicts 250 days of load shedding, significantly impacting businesses and economic growth.
  3. Authorities urge residents to switch off electrical appliances before load shedding to facilitate efficient power restoration and minimize the risk of extended outages.

In response to higher-than-anticipated energy demand, South African power utility Eskom has announced an indefinite implementation of stage 5 load shedding across the country, starting at 05h00 on 12 April. The company will provide an update on the situation later this afternoon. Cape Town, however, will experience a reduced stage 4 load shedding, thanks to the city’s 180MW Steenbras pumped-storage dam.

This decision comes after Eskom temporarily suspended load shedding during specific periods of the Easter weekend. South Africa has faced near-constant load shedding since September 2022, with only a three-day reprieve from the blackouts. The South African Reserve Bank projects that the country will endure a total of 250 days of load shedding, which will significantly impact businesses and impede economic growth.

Both Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and various analysts have warned that South Africa may be facing a cold and dark winter. The City of Cape Town has explained that colder temperatures typically lead to increased power usage, further straining the already struggling energy infrastructure.

The city has also urged residents to switch off electrical appliances before load shedding begins, as failure to do so could prolong the restoration of power following the scheduled blackouts. By taking this precaution, residents can help minimize the risk of extended outages and support a more efficient return of electricity services.

As the South African energy crisis continues to unfold, this story will be closely followed by both local and international media. To stay informed and adapt to the changing energy landscape, individuals and businesses alike are encouraged to monitor updates from Eskom and local authorities.
