With over 2881 hours of power outages experienced in South Africa in 2022, and a worsening energy crisis in 2023, the demand for alternative power solutions has surged. President Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster in February, emphasizing the urgency to invest in cost-effective, clean, and sustainable energy sources. As solar panel tax incentives are included in the 2023 Budget Review, South Africans are encouraged to consider solar power as a viable alternative.

Andrew van der Hoven, Standard Bank’s head of digital and eCommerce, highlights that South Africa’s abundant sunshine and ranking among the top three countries for average direct solar radiation make it an ideal location for solar power. Solar power systems, comprising solar panels, inverters, batteries, and battery charge controllers, can help reduce carbon emissions and provide reliable energy.

Three types of solar power systems are available: grid-tied systems, backup or hybrid systems, and off-grid systems. However, backup or hybrid systems are often considered the most practical and cost-effective option for homes and businesses.

Despite the initial high setup costs, solar solutions have become more affordable and can save consumers thousands in the long run. To facilitate the adoption of renewable energy solutions, Standard Bank has developed LookSee.co.za, a home efficiency platform designed to help customers choose the most appropriate backup power and solar solutions for their needs.

LookSee.co.za offers a panel of vetted solar providers, ensuring that customers receive quality products and services. Users of the platform benefit from an expert needs analysis, exceptional products and experienced solar installers, and ongoing support from the LookSee Solar Concierge Team. Standard Bank also provides tailored financial solutions with competitive pricing and flexible repayment options for solar installations.
