  • NVIDIA Corp announces plans to build Israel’s most powerful AI supercomputer, Israel-1, to meet surging customer demand for AI applications.
  • Israel-1 is a cloud-based system with an expected performance of up to eight exaflops, making it one of the world’s fastest AI supercomputers.
  • NVIDIA’s investment in Israel-1 reflects its commitment to supporting Israeli startups, fostering innovation, and advancing AI research and development.

NVIDIA Corp, the world’s most valuable listed chip company, revealed on Monday its ambitious plan to construct Israel’s most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer, named Israel-1. With customer demand for AI applications soaring, NVIDIA aims to meet the industry’s growing needs by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in this cloud-based system, which is expected to be partially operational by the end of 2023.

Israel has emerged as a thriving hub for technological innovation, and NVIDIA has been actively engaged with the local startup ecosystem. Working closely with 800 startups in Israel and collaborating with tens of thousands of software engineers, NVIDIA has played a pivotal role in driving advancements in AI research and development.

Israel-1 is poised to deliver unparalleled performance, capable of reaching up to eight exaflops of AI computing power. To put this into perspective, a single exaflop has the capability to perform one quintillion calculations per second. With this remarkable computing capacity, Israel-1 is set to become one of the world’s fastest AI supercomputers.

Gilad Shainer, Senior Vice President at NVIDIA, emphasized the critical role of AI as the “most important technology in our lifetime.” He further highlighted the necessity for large-scale graphics processing units (GPUs) in developing AI and generative AI applications. Generative AI has witnessed widespread adoption across various industries, necessitating efficient training on vast datasets. Israel-1’s implementation will empower companies in Israel to access a supercomputer of unprecedented magnitude, significantly enhancing their ability to tackle complex problems and expedite training processes.

NVIDIA’s acquisition of Mellanox Technologies, an Israeli chip designer, in 2019 for nearly $7 billion laid the foundation for the creation of Israel-1. The former Mellanox team, renowned for its expertise in chip design and high-performance computing, has spearheaded the development of this cutting-edge supercomputer. NVIDIA’s strategic acquisition has bolstered its position in the Israeli tech landscape, outbidding competitors such as Intel Corp.

While Israel’s partners remain NVIDIA’s primary focus for Israel-1, Shainer revealed that the system may be utilized for collaborations with international partners in the future. This potential expansion of partnerships holds the promise of fostering global cooperation and facilitating advancements in AI research and applications worldwide.

Last week, NVIDIA garnered attention by collaborating with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom to construct a new supercomputer utilizing a groundbreaking NVIDIA chip. This development aims to challenge the offerings of rivals such as Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., further underscoring NVIDIA’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of computational power and AI capabilities.

As the demand for AI applications continues its meteoric rise, NVIDIA’s investment in Israel-1 demonstrates the company’s dedication to empowering startups and driving technological innovation. By providing Israel’s tech ecosystem with an unparalleled infrastructure for AI model training and complex problem-solving, Israel-1 is poised to accelerate the pace of AI development in Israel and beyond. NVIDIA’s commitment to being at the forefront of the AI revolution is set to reshape industries and redefine the possibilities of artificial intelligence.
